Sonia Salazar

Sonia Salazar is the owner and chef of Barracuda Bistro & Bar on Chapel St.  When she opened the Latin American gastro bar three years ago she actively strived to create a safe place for the LGBTQ community.  While Barracuda is not a gay bar, it has successfully created a significant addition to the LGBTQ spaces in the city through openness and welcoming that has permeated the ambiance of the restaurant.

Sonia’s passion for food started when I was seven years old, cooking recipes passed down from generation to generation.  Moving to this country began her culinary exploration and opened her palate to a new world of cooking and tasting, enticing her to learn the ways of food preparation from other cultures. Her culinary experience working for the Hyatt & Westin hotels gave her the opportunity to work with and learn from many international chefs.  Her personal food creativity was further enriched during her time working with Chef Jean Pierre at the Union League Café and chef Franco at Rumba and her time spent at Morton Steakhouse and Prime 16 allowed her to focus on the details of simplicity in classic American cuisine.
