Interview with Dorothy Awards honorees Trevor Reynolds and Michael Morgan

Trevor and Michael work together as a couple, and individually, donating their time consistently to assist organizations across the state both as volunteers and fundraisers. Trevor and Michael (the latter as Morgana de Luxe) reigned as emperor and empress last year with Imperial Sovereign Court of All Connecticut. They support organizations such as St. Philip House, the Hartford Gay & Lesbian Health Collective, True Colors, the Connecticut Breast Health Initiative, and many more. Michael is also a founding member of the Hartford Harlettes.

Former Center co-president Thomas Donato interviewed Frank for this week’s nominee introduction:

  1. You have volunteered so much of your time to organizations in Connecticut; why do you do what you do?
Michael – My father instilled in us when we were young to give back and to do it because it can help somebody, not how it can help you.
Trevor – I believe in doing good wherever I can, it’s about helping those in need. I thank my mother for giving me those values.
  2. What is the best thing about working together?
Michael – Because we’ve been together for so long we click and understand each other’s strengths and weaknesses to find the best approach to be successful.
Trevor – We live, work and raise funds together. While that is a lot of time together, it does give us a unique perspective. It does however make for some very interesting rides into work…
  3. How have you seen LGBT equality change in Connecticut since you’ve become involved in charitable giving?
Michael – Back in the day when you were raising money for HIV and AIDS, people would give you ‘the look’; now times have changed and people are much more receptive.
Trevor – Marriage equality was a pipe dream 15 years ago. Now over two-thirds of the United States has it! The furthering of Transgender rights has come so far so quickly, but (we) still have so far to go.
  4. Who will play Trevor and Michael (and Morgana!) in the movie of your lives?
Trevor – Alton Brown; Morgana – Melissa McCarthy; Michael – Kevin James
  5. What accomplishments are you most proud of?
Michael – Our record breaking reign.
Trevor – Our Life’s a Drag…Let’s Do Brunch! annual fundraiser for St. Philip House. What started out with 30 people; now 8 years later, the event is practically a sellout every time. That is our community showing their support and that is what I’m most proud of.
  6. Talk about your involvement with the Imperial Sovereign Court of All Connecticut. What’s the secret to that organization’s success and longevity?
Michael – Because it’s a game and there is a fundraising aspect to it, it’s fun! You have drag queens and kings and all types people working together for a common good.
Trevor – It’s about family and the people you meet along the way. These are my chosen family and I can’t see my life without them.
  7. What do each of you do in your spare time?
Michael – What spare time? I direct musicals (The Older Members show for the Boys and Girls Club in Bristol April 17th and 18th) as well as sing with the Hartford Gay Men’s Chorus.
Trevor – Sleep! Besides that my hobbies include bicycling, cars, technology and music.
  8. What would you like people to know about you (that we don’t already know)?
Michael – My family was friends with (former) Connecticut governor Thomas Meskill and as kids we would play in the governor’s mansion.
Trevor – My favorite meal is meatloaf and mashed potatoes and my favorite movie is The Big Chill; exciting stuff huh?
  9. Who or what inspires you?
Michael – The memory of my father, Roger Morgan and the people who helped make me the person I am today.
Trevor – The courage of our LGBT youth; Queen Mother of the Americas Nicole the Great; and the memory of Jose Sarria the founder of The International Court System.
  10. Where do each of you hope to be in five years?
Michael –Living someplace warm near the beach.
Trevor – Hopefully in a non 9-5 job, selling Subarus and waiting for the weekend to go to the next event and raising some money.
