Get to Know 2012 Dorothy Honoree Robin Banks!

How long have you lived in the New Haven area, and why do you call this area home?

I have lived in New Haven for 7 years now. I call New Haven home because there is such a diverse music and art scene in New Haven.

Who or what inspires you to share your gifts with the community, and take such an active role in fundraising?

I love to make people laugh and I really enjoy being able to use that motivation to help others, whether through educating, motivating or raising money for worthwhile causes.

What are some of your favorite things to do in New Haven?

I love to go to the Criterion (a movie theater in downtown New Haven) for movies on Tuesday; you can get a $6 movie and a $5 bucket of popcorn.

Who would play you in the movie about your life?

If he were still alive I think that Danny Kaye would do a lovely job portraying me in a movie.

Tell us something about yourself that would surprise us!

I went to school to become an interpreter for the deaf.

What changes have you seen in our LGBT community in the time that you’ve been active here?

Gay Marriage!

What will you do with your Dorothy Award?

First I will check to see if the spelling of my name is correct. (Editor: We will make sure it is!!) I have never received an award or certificate with my name spelled correctly. Even the names on my birth certificate and in my high school yearbook are spelled wrong. Then I will take pictures and post them on Facebook.

Describe Robin Banks in just five words.

Robin Banks = Funny. Ambitious. Clever. Outspoken. Pepsi.

What can we expect from you in 2012?

I have some great plans for 2012. One of the projects I am most excited about is The Robin Banks Family Friendly Show, coming this Summer. It is an interactive one-woman show designed for all ages.
